Popular Hairstyles for 2020

Over the last few years we have seen a range of hairstyles making their way into the mainstream. From retro styles like the beehive making a comeback to modern trends like the “wet hair look”. We are already a few months into 2020 and there are a number of new styles appearing on catwalks and red carpets, influencing people around the world. In this blog we are going to be looking at some of our top picks for popular hairstyles in 2020.

Short Hair

Short hair is set to be really on trend for the rest of this year, in particular hair of the bob variety. Bobs are a great way to shape the hair to fit the shape of your face and provide a real sophisticated vibe. Alternatively, you can go for a more casual look by having it cut to collarbone length. Khloé Kardashian is one celebrity who has pulled this style off perfectly!

The Shag

Relaxed is the new glamourous in 2020. With fashion we are seeing more people opting for denim, trainers and natural looking make up on nights out. The modern shag haircut is one perfect example of a laid-back approach to hair styling becoming popular. This style uses fewer layers but is cut so there’s more than just one length. The shag haircut has been popular with glam rock stars of years gone by but it is making a huge comeback this year.

Streaks have been in and out of fashion in recent times, but they are currently enjoying a mini resurgence. Pastel colours are proving popular rather than the bright colours such as red that have been popular for streaks in the past. With more muted colours and subtle streaks, your hair can enjoy a real touch of class.

We Are Award Winners!

Having recently opened our Leeds salon, we were delighted to be finalists in the Yorkshire Salon Awards, where we won the Best Hair Extension award!

The team travelled to The Royal Armouries in Leeds on Sunday 10th November, we were hopeful for a win but hyped by nerves at the same time. The competition that we were facing was daunting but we know how good we are, it was just a question of if industry judges recognise that.

The team was euphoric as you can imagine when it was announced that Lox of love were the overall winner of the hair extension category! Proud doesn’t come close.

Without our founder, Victoria Cartwright none of these amazing events would have unfolded or been possible, we have collectively worked so hard to be where we are now, everyone has been a great credit in our journey and progression to this moment.

Victoria says “I cannot put into words just how incredible this award win is and how proud I am of the Lox of Love family. To be recognised by our peers and industry as the best in Yorkshire is incredible. What an accolade to end the year on.”

Established in 2012, the first salon opened in Newton Aycliffe in County Durham. It soon became recognised as the go-to place for quality, long lasting hair extensions and other hair services. We went onto become finalists in the English Hair and Beauty Awards in 2016 and won our first award in 2017, the Hair Extension Specialist of the Year at the Hair and Beauty British Talent Awards.

Victoria added: “A good salon relies on its team and that’s as evident from myself to as the team on the salon floor. This team defines the vision for the salon, inspires the rest of the business and sets a standard that gets clients through the door. It’s a hugely important award and demonstrates what can be created when a group of talented, creative people truly gel together and work with synergy.”

With the latest award added to our collection, our creative team are excited to see what the future holds!

For all you extension wearers who wonder what brush is best for you? Well I am going to give you some ideas of what we would recommend to stop any matting, snapped ends and to give you a pain free experience. There are a range of brushes out there which we all use, however many of these are bad for hair extensions as they pull in all the wrong places. The first definite no for brushing the roots of extensions is a paddle brush. Although these are great for taking out any knots on natural hair, it pulls the bonds or weft and can also get caught in them. But of course, you can’t just leave the tops of the extensions as they will get matted which can be very painful to remove.

For thorough brushing of the extensions we would recommend 100% the Tangle Teezers. I’m sure you’ve all heard of these before, great for kids who hate getting their hair brushed as they somehow stop it from pulling as much as a paddle brush.

There are Tangle Teezer compacts which are great for using on the go. These are hand bag size so no matter where you are you can always brush your hair. These brushes glide through the hair rather than nag at it- for extensions this is great as you don’t want to cause too much tension!

In the salon we use a lot of the Tangle Teezer ultimate. We love these as they are great for all hair types. They sell extremely well in the salon too for a number of reasons:

  • They remove any matting between the extensions and your natural hair
  • They are great for brushing through curls to create a bouncy wave/curl
  • The larger teeth on the brush allow you to get right into the scalp, so it feels like you’ve had a good brush through

Another range of brushes that we use are by Beauty Works. These are similar to a Tangle Teezer however come in a paddle brush shape, round brush and an oval brush.  The paddle bristle brush is great for blow drying extensions, it smooths out the hair and again takes out any knotting which may be at the roots. This is best for people who have very long hair as sometimes it can be harder using a round brush when there is so much hair

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

A question we are often asked, yet the answer depends solely on the aftercare of the extensions. As you may or may not know extensions have a life span of on average 6 months, however with new brands and methods becoming more popular, this is sometimes longer and people are getting 12 months or even more! Amazing right? However, the quality of the extensions is one thing, but looking after them correctly is crucial or you will not get the said lifespan of your hair extensions.

So what does this involve?

If I’m totally honest, less is more. You don’t need to feel like you should overload your hair with products to try and keep them in good condition. If anything, you can cause product build up and they are more likely to feel unnatural. The aim of all extensions is to achieve the most natural effect for your desired look, therefore the texture of the hair is important. Over-washing your extensions, drying and using styling tools daily is more likely to shorten the lifespan of your extensions and therefore dry them out faster. However, there are ways round this which mean you can still use styling tools on the extensions without causing any immediate damage. Read below for more information. We recommend washing them once or twice a week at the most.

Washing & Drying

To wash your hair seems so simple, but we all do it differently and with extensions it’s slightly different. We don’t recommend putting all your hair on top of your head and rubbing it all together, as obviously it is more likely to go knotty. On the other hand, we also don’t want you to be afraid of giving your head a good scrub, in fear that they will fall out- as they are designed to stay in your hair even whilst washing/drying. We recommend you shampoo twice as firstly you may not get much lather with this one… it is designed to clean all of the dirt from your hair and scalp. The second shampoo is where the hair is cleaned and made to smell lovely and fresh, you will then find on this wash you will get a much better lather with the shampoo. Remember to give your scalp a good scrub and rinse thoroughly- this prevents the scalp from feeling itchy or irritated after a wash. Finally, finishing with a conditioner or mask treatment, usually we say you leave either of these on for a minimum of 3 minutes to allow it to penetrate and smooth the hair cuticles. This is designed for the mid length and ends of the hair- avoiding the root at all costs as you will only end up with greasy hair! This wash should then last up to a week, using dry shampoo in between washes to refresh your hair. A mask doesn’t need to be used every time- it’s just nice to revive your extensions every few weeks with a treatment.

Avoiding certain products

As extensions are much more delicate than our natural hair, we need to use the correct products. Usually these are salon branded products which are free from sulphates, parabens and alcohol. We love brands like Milkshake, Kevin Murphy, Neil and Wolf, Olaplex and a few others which all have extension friendly products. An Argan oil is great for the extensions to run through the mid lengths and ends daily… this can be either morning or night, however it is great to ensure those ends feel lovely and smooth. We don’t recommend using any branded oils, unless designed for extensions, as often we have found they’ve dried the extensions out. Our preferred oil would be a natural oil, or ‘Kevin Murphy Young Again’ or ‘Olaplex No 7’ which are both amazing for the extensions (these can be purchased in salon). We also don’t recommend heat protection sprays unless stated for extensions- with experience we have noticed heat protection spray is the cause of drying out extensions and causing breakage through the ends.

Brushing your extensions… properly

Often, we find ourselves detangling extensions through the top section due to extensions being poorly brushed. Now this is no fault of your own as naturally we are more gentle and fearful of pulling them out or causing any damage. So, most people brush over the extensions- rather than getting right in between the rows and brushing the root. However not brushing your extensions correctly and frequently is likely to cause more damage and irritation than anything else. This is because both the natural hair and the extensions over time will tangle around each other in between the rows and cause it to feel knotty. This isn’t going to cause major damage to your hair, it’s more the discomfort when coming for your maintenance or removal, having to sit there whilst we are detangling the hair. Not good! Soooo…

To stop this from happening it’s really simple… using either a Tangle Teezer with long teeth (this is called the Tangle Teezer ‘ultimate’) or a bristle paddle brush which you can also purchase in the salon. This is good to do thoroughly before washing your hair and then after when the hair is 70% dry. We would suggest you section the hair in half or in three, then put your brush through the extensions and the top where they are connected and begin to blow-dry. This removes any tangling and leaves the extensions feeling nice and smooth.

Reducing Shedding

Now don’t be alarmed when brushing the extensions if you find some of the hair sheds, this is completely normal and can’t be helped. However, to reduce this please don’t brush your hair less, as that will not help. There are other ways which we can prevent this. Hair extensions are more likely to shed if it is feeling dry or brittle, so by using the right products it will avoid this from happening.

With a good routine with your hair extensions and planned days to wash, you will find they are often easier to maintain than your natural hair and can last for months. You will have the fullest, smoothest and healthiest looking hair extensions… no one would ever know!

5 Different Ways to Curl with the Curl Bar by Hot Tools

Hello to all of our wonderful clients! For those of you who purchased the Curl Bar by Hot Tools, I’m sure you are absolutely loving it, and if you haven’t… after reading this I’m sure you will be totally convinced!

As a team at Lox of Love we have challenged ourselves to 5 different curl styles with the Curl Bar. The first style is a very loose wave. This is done by taking big sections and wrapping the hair round the bar. You then leave this on for around 5 seconds, this can be done by pressing the button on the side of the Curl Bar. You then repeat this all the way round the head, curling in the same direction all the way round. Now the key to these beautiful waves is to brush them out and don’t worry, you won’t brush the Curl out!! It just creates a smooth, elegant wave in the hair. To hold it you can use our go-to products, the Kevin Murphy Doo.Over and finish with Shimmer Shine! And there you have it, a lovely wave…

Challenge number 1 accepted✔️

To then create a bouncier wave, with more volume… the key is to hold the hair round the barrel for longer. This means turning the timer up to 7/8 seconds. Again, in the same direction all the way around the head, taking smaller sections than before. Of course, then you need to brush it out, this is what creates the bounce in the hair. Even see for yourself…

Now a lot of people like the messy, undone look. This is created with the curl bar (of course!). Taking larger sections, you wrap the hair around the curl bar, this time it doesn’t need to be on for very long as this is a natural, loose wave we are creating. You then repeat this all the way around the head. HOWEVER… you do it in alternative directions. So curl one way first, then alternate the other. This stops the curls from falling into one when you brush it out and creates this amazing look!

To hold the style, we use Doo.Over and/or Shimmer Shine by Kevin Murphy. Now I know you’re thinking, can you use the Curl Bar on short hair and achieve the same look? The answer is yes! To create a tighter curl, you leave the hair round the bar for longer. If you keep doing this in different directions, you create a beach look. Hair Resort Spray, a product by Kevin Murphy is great to use with this style as it is like a sea salt spray except it is kinder to hair extensions. Below is a few examples of the beach look created with the Hot Tools Curl Bar.

The last style is created by using tiny sections and leaving the hair on the bar for 7+ seconds. It is curled in multiple directions to create a tighter beach curl.

So there you have it, 5 different ways of curling your hair. Even though the barrel is one size, there is more than one look you can achieve! Amazing right? Even better, you can do this on your own hair! Here is a quick video of how…

What’s your favourite style?

Thanks for reading, we hope this helps people who have the Curl Bar to do multiple things with your hair, or for those who are thinking about purchasing one – it really is the best styling tool ever!
